The busy Garden Gnomes have been stirring up the topsoil out in front of the shop lately! And by Gnomes, I actually mean Linda & Elisa! Almost overnight, our power Mom & Daughter duo have managed to spruce up our garden area with vibrant blooms, flowering fruits, & fragrant herbs. But they have chosen to do so in their own Signature Vintage Style!!!

Container gardening is the ideal solution for those who do not like weeding or cannot physically take care of a conventional garden, and container gardening is also a fantastic solution for renters. "I have physical limitations, and although I love flowers and fresh veggies I cannot physically take care of a large flowerbed or garden, even with a tiller and hand tools of the highest quality. Instead, I chose container gardening because weeds are far fewer and easier to pull, and the containers are up off the ground and easier to reach." says Linda.

Container gardening also provides countless unique decorating options for outdoor spaces. Elisa proclaims "In the past I spent hours weeding a conventional flowerbed, and I paid for it dearly. With container gardening I can sit on the ground and take care of my vegetable plants and unique flower arrangements, and I can have the beautiful live plants I want without all of the work that comes with conventional gardening. These unique container gardening ideas are some that I have used used around my own outdoor oasis at home...I just brought the same imaginative solutions here, at the shop, to share with our valued customers."

 Linda advises that "When container gardening, consider selecting a very large planter, and fill it with flowers that grown in your zone. Select flowers of varying height to add interest and depth to your display. Select two, or three flowers of the same color value when designing, and place them together for more impact", she continues. Do not be concerned with open areas. With proper care and plenty of water, sunshine, and fertilizer applied according to product label instructions, the flowers and foliage will soon fill in any open areas and create a gorgeous display unlike any other beneath the never ending sky.

CREATE YOUR VERY OWN VINTAGE
CONTAINER GARDEN IN 5 EASY STEPS:

Materials and Tools:

~ Vintage container of your choice - we have lots of awesome containers at Vintage Home Collective that would work perfect for this project!!!
~ Good quality planting soil
~ Flowers or greenery that grow best locally (Linda & Elisa used mums, pansies, straw flowers, lavender, sweet alyssum, strawberries, and a variety of bulbs)

Steps:

1. Make sure your container is completely clean before planting anything in it.
2. Make drain holes in the bottom with a screwdriver, and drop a thin layer of fine gravel at the bottom to help prevent the soil from escaping when you water.
3. Fill it with a good quality planting soil.
4. Plant the flowers. Keep in mind where you will be placing your new planter, and if it gets enough sun/shade for the type of flowers or plants you want to use.
5. Use the final product as a decoration for the patio or deck, or even to add a splash of color to a sunny interior window. Remember to water daily!

Country Primitives Are Back At "Of Simpler Tymes"!

The rustic simplicity and country beauty of primitive furniture makes it a useful and timeless style for your home. Recalling original primitive pieces from antique woodworkers and American pioneers, the functionality and hand-hewn roughness of primitive styled furniture pieces makes it perennially popular. 

 Another appealing aspect of "Of Simpler Tymes" attention to detail is their wonderfully muted color palette. Like old-fashioned milk paints of the 19th century, their furniture comes in great colors: barn red, cottage white, old black, colonial blue, and mustard instantly bring this popular and warm design style into your home. Inspired by original plant dyes from earlier centuries, these primitive colors are a nod to past craftsmanship from a bygone era.

Collecting: A Closer Look At Jadeite

 In the 1940s and 1950s, jadeite - a stain- and heat-resistant, milky-green glassware - was quite common and sold in hardware stores and five-and-tens. Sometimes a piece of jadeite would be included in a bag of flour or a box of oatmeal as an inducement to the consumer to buy the rest of the set. Today, jadeite is a popular - and valuable - collectible. A ball jug that once sold for $5 could sell for as much as $5,000 today.

 
McKee was the first company to mass-produce jadeite dinnerware in the '30s. The company's only complete dinnerware line is also the least popular today: the delicate and frilly patterned Laurel. You can identify McKee jadeite by the letters "McK" in a small circle on the back. The Jeannette Glass Company, however, actually coined the term jadeite. Most Jeannette jadeite is unmarked, except for some of the earlier pieces, which have the letter "J" in a triangle, followed by the mold number.

 
The Anchor Hocking Company produced Fire-King, a type of glassware that could withstand the high temperatures of ovens and stoves. "Jade-ite" was one of their most popular colors. Many jadeite aficionados collect Fire-King Restaurantware, a very popular and increasingly hard-to-find pattern. As the name suggests, it was made for institutional use in restaurants, hotels, and hospitals, and so is heavier than other makes, and much harder to break.

 If you're interested in collecting jadeite, David Ross, a dealer of 20th-century glassware and coauthor of "Jadeite: An Identification and Price Guide," recommends examining each piece thoroughly for chips and cracks. Because jadeite was meant to be inexpensive glassware, there was no quality control. So you may notice that there are different shades of green, making it difficult to find matching sets. The good thing about jadeite is that it's very durable. You can wash it as you do any dish; keep it out of the microwave, though, as jadeite was produced before microwaves existed and is not meant to withstand that kind of heat.

Local residents Cherie & Hilary Marckx are really a crafty and artistic couple.  For those of you don't know this already, Hilary is the local preacher at the church right next door to our shop, but during his free time he can be found in his workshop working wood into whimsical shapes like the moose wall hanger (pictured below).  He also reinterprets found wood (like old fencing boards) into smart and functional "treasure boxes".  Cherie represents the softer side of this duo...she works in textiles, creating lavish and lovely quilts and wall hangings:
